Progress: week one

I have not been able to post an update because unfortunately, like most things in this house, the internet won't work. We are waiting for a technician to come out this weekend and get it set up for us.

We are finding that during the work week it is very hard to get a lot accomplished. We have both had errands to run and then we walk our dogs. By the time this is done we just want to veg and cuddle with the boys.

Last night Michael put together our picnic table and we got to eat our second meal in the house while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Apparently I can't quite figure out how to do this how I want to on my phone. Next time I will post photos of all the progress we have made and all the visitors we have had.

Little Helpers

This week is my first week back to work before the students arrive on Monday. As you can imagine a week of meetings and planning does not make it easy to spend a lot of time in the new (to us) house. So far, I have managed to make it over there every day after work to remove at least a little wallpaper.

People warned me how horrible removing wallpaper can be, and I can honestly say they were wrong. It's WORSE!!! I feel like I have worked on it for hours and have seen little progress. I am trying very hard to get our master bedroom ready and painted before we move on Saturday afternoon and so far it is not looking promising.

On a positive note, I got a visit from my two favorite kids in the middle of my depressing wallpaper endeavor. Perfect way to cheer me up! They were such great helpers.

Great helper!

Doggy Diggs

On Tuesday we decided to take the dogs over to the new house to get acquainted. I have been researching ways to make moves easier on animals, here is what I found:

  • Bring them to the house ahead of time to check it out
  • Make their dog beds and toys the FIRST thing to go in the house so they have a safe cozy place to go to
Sampson especially got so stressed out when he saw us packing at the old house. For a week straight, he basically lived in his kennel. Because I do not want him to feel that way again, we will be leaving him at my parents' during the BIG MOVE.

When we pulled up to the new house, the dogs definitely looked anxious. They were ready to explore. They went straight into the basement and I was a little surprised by their reactions. They both had their tails between their legs and were cautiously searching through each and every room. Of course, Oliver stayed close by his big brother - just in case. It was funny because they would peek into a room, and quickly back up.

Eventually, after searching every room (even behind the doors), every toilet, closet and shower - they determined it to be safe. They went back down stairs and started their search again, but this time - with wagging tails.

Oliver apparently made himself at home - by jumping on the kitchen counter???

He saw his Dad at the bar and needed some lovin'

Picture quality is not the best. Like most of my belongings - I do not know where my camera is for the time being. More fun projects to come...like wallpaper removing, fence building and lawn mower buying!

Home is Where the Heart is

Over the last few weeks,  Mike and I have been going through the grueling  process of purchasing our (hopefully) forever home. During the search he was looking for land and I was looking for a beautiful new house with nice finishes. I will let you decide who won this battle.

When I first walked into this house - probably about three months ago. I was far from ecstatic. In fact, my mom and I almost refused to go in. While it was in a great neighborhood and the area we wanted, we could tell the house was outdated. After moping in the house and up the stairs, I started to get this feeling. While it may sound a little corny, I began to look past the dated wall paper and feel the happiness that filled the house. We then proceeded to walk out onto the deck. After standing there for a few moments, my mom and I looked at each other - both getting this overwhelming feeling of...rightness? Something felt right.

After leaving the house that day, we continued on our journey to find the "perfect home" only to end up right where we started. After a little back and forth and a lot of waiting, we finally received the keys to our new home!

While making this home ours will be a lot of work, it will also be a once in a lifetime (I hope) adventure.

Let the wild rumpus start!

Just for good luck, we had to start removing wallpaper! Clearly, my husband is a pro at this...and very animated.

His friend Chris has to take part in all of the fun, he doesn't look so sure.

Meal Planning

To avoid eating out as much, I try to plan my meals for the whole month. Some people might be rolling their eyes at this, but I truly enjoy making our menu and I look forward to it each month. I have mentioned this before, but I typically grab my newest cooking magazine and have my food boards on Pinterest readily accessible.

Here are the steps I take:

1. Fill out any dates I know we have dinner plans, or dates I know we would like to have dinner plans.

2. We typically have Tacos and Yum bowls every week, or every two weeks - I fill these in next. I like to plan these meals during the week because they are easy and make great lunch leftovers. The Hubs is also good at whipping this up!

3. On Mondays I try to plan a crock pot meal. Mondays are rough enough as it is, I don't want to add cooking dinner to my list. Typically, I have plenty of time on Sundays to prep the meal so all I have to do Monday morning, is throw everything in the pot.

4. I look through Pinterest or previous recipes I have used, and put fish on the menu once a week. I don't care for cooked fish all that much, so finding recipes that excite me is pretty challenging.

5. Fill in the rest of the days with new things I want to try or meals I know we love!

February Menu

This process is fun for me, inspires me to try new recipes, and I never have to worry about what I will cook for dinner.

I usually go through each meal and write down any non-perishable ingredients or meat needed for the meal. Then I grocery shop for all of those items at the beginning of the month, plus the produce and everything else I need for the current week's meals. Then each week, we shop for more produce, milk, lunch meat and sometimes bread. I found that by going to the grocery store more often, we tend to waste less food.

If I make something like split pea soup or taco soup, I will double the recipe, freeze it, and use it again for another meal. Saves a lot of time! Anything with a "P" next to it, means I can find the recipe on one of my Pinterest boards.

I will try to post some our favorites!

For 2013

1.       Run a 5K:

Over the past six months I have been working towards a healthier lifestyle (we will just pretend like the span of time from Thanksgiving to Christmas didn’t happen). Part of my journey has included a lot of running, which I have actually learned to enjoy. For me, running is more about will power than anything else. I find myself getting bored and wanting to quit. Because of this, I am setting my sights on a 5K (just over 3 miles) instead of something more grueling…I will save that for another life. Before the holidays, I was running 2 miles without stopping and it felt great! However, since my short hiatus, I have a feeling I will have to make up for lost time.  I have a lot of working out to do in order to prepare myself, and at this point I do not have a goal time, I am just focusing on finishing and feeling good about my progress.
2.       Limit interaction with people who are not a positive addition/influence in my life:
I have found that there are many sad and challenging things in life that are out of our control. This being said - I want to rid myself of any negative aspects of my life that are in my control. I can be a very anxious, high stress person and find myself getting sucked into negativity and drama where it is not necessary. This has caused WAY too many unnecessary stomachaches over the years and I am ready to be done. Going about this will be a challenge in and of itself. The best solution I have come up with thus far is to really choose how I spend my time and who I spend it with. I need to stop dwelling on things that are out of my control and I need to let go of hurt feelings people have caused in the past. As far as my time goes, it is just that – MY time. I recently read a quote on Pinterest talking about how you are most like the 5 people you spend the most time with. Reading this really made me think about the 5 people I spend the most time with (or 10), and I truly feel blessed, because these people are fabulous, respectable, supportive people and I should spend my time focusing on that.

3.       Organize my entire house by the end of February: This is not as daunting as it sounds. My best friend has described my house (and I, for that matter), as messy on the outside, but organized on the inside. Lucky for me, most of my house is already organized. The main things I need to focus on are our office/craft room, and a downstairs coat closet which has become my dirty little secret (piled 5ft high with junk). I could also use a little more de-cluttering throughout!

4.       Eat less pre-packaged/processed food: This resolution is about being a healthier person. I can admit this will probably be tough to do. My husband and I are both extremely busy and one thing I have found I am unwilling to sacrifice is my social life. I am currently trying to juggle a full-time job, being a wife, spending time with my two doggies, enjoying time with friends, keeping my house somewhat under control, exercising and cooking healthy  meals for my husband and I. As some of you know and others can imagine, this is extremely difficult! Sometimes it is just easy to grab a frozen Lean Cuisine for lunch or buy sugary juice/soda from the store. Here are some steps I am going to take and some I have already taken, to accomplish this goal.
a.       I received a juicer from my In-laws for Christmas, which was one of my favorite gifts! Since I’ve had this wonderful machine of deliciousness, I have been making a plethora of juices! I found that it is much more effective to spend about an hour making a great amount of juice and stocking up for the days that follow. We have been storing the juice in glass bottles with airtight seals, as well as small jars to take in our lunches. Even my husband loves this routine.
b.      Bake some sort of “sweet” each Sunday for the following week (mostly for my husband, I am trying not to eat too many sweets.)
c.       Bring salads for lunch! If I prep the salad toppings on Sunday, they are super quick and easy to throw together the night before or in the morning for my lunches. Add some cut up chicken breast and I am good to go!
d.      Eat more fruit.
e.      Don’t buy frozen meals, they are much too tempting in the morning when I would rather watch last night’s episode of Parenthood than make my lunch.

5.       Be a better wife: This resolution is not for a specific reason other than my husband is my best friend in the World and the person I spend the most time with. I want to make an effort to be better for him all around. This will mean being happier, understanding and patient as well as pulling my weight around the house. I am no 1950s housewife nor am I a feminist. I cook dinner, I do laundry and do a lot of the cleaning and that’s how I think it should be. I don’t think that’s how it needs to be for everyone, but for our lifestyle it works. My husband works extremely hard and his job is very physical. I don’t think he should have to come home and clean or cook dinner, however, he does occasionally do both of those things. Don’t get me wrong, I am not going to sit around and wait on him hand and foot, he contributes a LOT to our household and completes many household chores that gross me out. A while back, I read one of Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s book, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands. I am not sure why, but I was immediately offended by this title. Not for myself, but for my husband. For some reason I thought it was going to be about how to train your husband do be who you want and do the things that make you happy. After reading the book, I found it very relevant, and not about controlling your husband, but about being the kind of wife that makes your husband want to be the best man he can be. Great book, I want to start putting it into practice more often.

2013

One of my New Years resolutions is to get back to blogging. Not because I think I should, but because I want to and I love it! Over the past few months I have started a new chapter in my life - Chapter 6: TEACHER! Why chapter 6? I have no idea, it sounded good.

My job has been keeping me busy, but I feel like I can start to juggle more of my hobbies again. I look forward to keeping you posted on fun family outings, awesome recipes, entertaining and home projects!

Happy New Year!
